Partly due to the fact that I completed my Bachelor of Music Program at Boston University in 1963, and also because I am an educator (Brown University 1970-75) as well as having observed the liberal arts program on the ground (Brown University) In my opinion, teaching should be a fusion of the study of art into other disciplines. That's not so surprising for the ethnomusicologist (MA 1967, PhD at UCLA)! My ethnomusicology degree, which I began at UC Berkeley in 1975-1976, is comfortably located in the department of music in the College of Letters and Science. I love exploring my interests in a variety of areas and seeing the big picture. Both undergraduates and graduate students (for whom I wrote three textbooks - Music in India, The Classical Traditions of India, Thinking Musically: Music in Japan - Experiencing Music - Expressing Cultural Expression) enjoy my teaching. Also, I rotate periods during which I engage in mainly academic pursuits with periods when I add administrative tasks to my agenda (Chair of the Department of Music 1983-88, Dean of Undergraduate Advising 1992-1998, Chair of The Deans of the College of Letters and Science 1994-98, Chairperson of the Group of Asian Studies Since 1999, and as Chair of the Department of Music again).
